A powerful new exhibition at Dimbola Galleries in Freshwater, titled “Dreams,” brings together the work of Ukrainian artist Yana Barabash. Her journey to the Isle of Wight has profoundly impacted both her life and her artistic expression. This is her most extensive Island exhibition to date and marks a significant milestone in her creative journey.
Three and a half years ago, Yana and her mother fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine, leaving their home in Odessa. They eventually settled in Ventnor.
Formally trained at the Kostandi Art School and the Grekov Odesa State Art College, Yana has exhibited widely across Ukraine, Spain, London, and the Isle of Wight. In 2025, she was honoured with a prestigious award at the UK Women in Art show held at London’s Roundhouse.
The connection between Yana and Dimbola is deeply personal. During her first visit, she was captivated by the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron and felt a profound sense of connection across time. Cameron’s emotional depth, presence, and fascination with beauty resonated with Yana, and she was immediately drawn to Freshwater’s light, landscape, and atmosphere.
The exhibition showcases several bodies of work created since Yana’s arrival in England. Some pieces directly respond to the Island’s coastline and scenery, while others continue her portraiture and figurative art. A central theme explores minerals, trees, and flowers, which Yana sees as symbols of stability, endurance, and inner strength. In an uncertain world, she believes these works offer “windows to a beautiful world,” providing stillness and connection.
The exhibition has been supported and sponsored by renowned art historian Dr. Robin MeInnes, who has worked closely with Yana over the past two years. His encouragement has been instrumental in bringing “Dreams” to life.
