Originally published in 1979, this eight-part epic by Barbara Taylor Bradford was a major success for Channel 4 when they first adapted it in 1985. The story of a Yorkshire housemaid's journey from poverty to becoming the leader of a retail empire—and the wealthiest woman in the world—remains as relevant today as ever.
Emma Harte's life is filled with love, ambition, betrayal, and loss. We first encounter her as an older woman in a limousine traveling through New York City, just as news breaks about her company's falling share price. Portrayed by Brenda Blethyn, a figure adorned in tweed and jewels, this business titan exudes a charm and warmth that is equally present in the younger Emma (Jessica Reynolds). The narrative shifts back and forth between the young and older Emma, paralleling her journey from poverty to wealth with the contemporary threat to everything she has achieved.
Throughout every phase of her story, Emma remains determined and resilient, a woman with a plan that no one—be it employer, suitor, husband, or lover—can disrupt. The production is visually stunning, and the cast delivers outstanding performances. While Bafta-winner Blethyn's excellence is expected, Reynolds also delivers a remarkably impressive performance.
